Back To School Tips - August 2, 2017

As summer comes to and end and the back-to-school season approaches, it can be hard to get back into the swing of all things school. With a new school year comes a lot of changes: new teachers, new schedule, new responsibilities, and maybe even a new school. The biggest trick to tackle the back-to-school blues is to plan ahead. Below are 20 ways that you can help you, and your children, prepare for the fresh school year.

1. Set your kids’ alarms to ‘School Time’ two weeks before the first day.
2. Discuss what your kids can expect on their first day, so they can feel more prepared.
3. Have your kids set realistic goals for the school year.
4. Go through your children’s clothing to determine what they have overgrown. This will make room for their new back-to-school clothes.
5. Obtain a class list of things your children will need this school year.
6. Let your kids tag along during back-to-school shopping. Allow them to pick out their own items.
7. Shop for supplies and clothes early, you’ll want to avoid the rush.
8. Replace old backpacks for newer, more ergonomically correct ones.
9. Do something fun with your kids to end the summer season.
10. Take them to their school to allow them to get comfortable with the layout and locations of important rooms such as their classroom, bathrooms, lunchroom, etc.
11. Sign your children up for after school programs to keep them active.
12. Set and enforce specific school friendly bed-times.
13. Encourage your kids to layout their clothes before they go to bed.
14. Meet the teachers your children will have this year.
15. Call us to get a fresh feeling home before the craziness of the school year ensues.

Allergens In The Home - May 3, 2017

Did you know that allergens are the 5th leading chronic disease in the U.S.? Many Americans suffer from allergies during the Spring season, and one of the number one places allergens hide is in your home.

So what exactly are you living with? What lies beneath might surprise you. Did you know that eight out of 10 people in the U.S. are exposed to dust mites daily? That’s because 2,000 dust mites can live on one ounce of carpet dust. Six out of 10 are exposed to dog or cat dander and pet dander is more potent in causing allergic reactions than the animal’s fur or hair. That’s really rough for the 5-10% of Americans that are allergic to pet dander. And just because you are inside does not mean you are safe from pollen. It is carried inside on your clothes, hair, pets, open windows and doors.

Americans pay $1.3 billion for allergy-related doctor visits and over $11 billion for allergy medications annually. Wouldn’t it be great if you could do something to help control your allergies and keep some of your hard earned cash in your pocket? It’s not a hopeless battle. There are several things you can do to cut back on dirt and allergens in your home which can trigger an attack:

  • Dust to control mites. By dusting surfaces and washing bedding often, you can control the amount of dust mites in your home.
  • Vacuum often. Vacuuming once or twice a week will reduce the surface dust mites and animal dander in your home. Use a high quality 3 stage HEPA filter type vacuum.
  • Professionally clean your carpets and upholstery. Every 3-4 months, have Chem-Dry deep clean your carpets and upholstery to remove 98% of common allergens*.
  • Reduce pet dander. Wash house pets weekly to cut down on the amount of allergens in your home. In between baths, wipe down pets when they return from outdoors.
  • Shut out pollen. Keep windows and doors closed to keep pollen out. Use an air filter and change it regularly.
  • Limit dirt intrusion. Put out a durable entrance mat for people to wipe off their feet before entering your home. Then require everyone to take off their shoes so less dirt is tracked inside.

Spring Cleaning Hot Spots - April 7, 2017

Did you know that Americans spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors? With that being said, spring cleaning becomes even more essential to create a safe and healthy living space. Spring cleaning can be quite a daunting task with the amount of cleaning there is to be done. The experts here at San Juan County Chem-Dry recommend that you don’t miss the following overlooked germ hotspots in your home. Cleaning these several areas help minimize germs and reduce allergens this season.

  • Tile. Porous grout, tile and stone can act like a magnet for dirt, dust and grimy particles such as mold spores. As undesirable particles gather on stone and tile surfaces, they can easily become a breeding ground for disease-causing bacteria in addition to masking the original color of the tile. For tile and grout cleaning in the bathroom and kitchen, it’s best to use a neutral pH tile cleaner in order to protect any previously applied sealers. Luckily for you, San Juan County Chem-Dry offers professional tile and stone cleaning, so you don’t have to do it yourself!
  • Upholstery. Upholstered furniture including sofas, love seats, recliners and dining room chairs provide a cozy haven for dust mites and dead skin. To reduce dust and dead skin build-up, thoroughly vacuum fabric-covered furniture and wash removable upholstery covers in hot water, letting them air dry.
  • Carpets, Rugs and Mats. Carpeting, rugs and mats accumulate dust and can become a feeding ground for microscopic dust mites. They pick up everything from pet urine to toenails and can hold approximately 200,000 bacteria per square inch. Bacteria and germs hiding in carpet fibers are not killed by vacuuming alone. So it’s absolutely vital to deep clean the area underneath rugs and mats as well. In fact, the EPA recommends homeowners have their carpets, rugs, and mats professionally cleaned two to three times a year.

  • Curtains and Blinds. Window curtains and blinds collect dust and dirt easily. Remove dust build-up by shutting blinds and dusting with a microfiber cloth. Next, close blinds in the opposite direction for a quick, thorough wipe-down using a non-toxic window cleaner and clean cloth.
  • Mattress. The average bed holds up to 10,000 dust mites, which can cause hay fever, asthma and allergies. Mattresses are a dust mite’s paradise as people sweat up to a half pint of moisture each night and shed up to nine pounds of skin each year while they sleep. Vacuum the mattress thoroughly and turn it over. Mattresses should be vacuumed at least once a month and turned over every six months to reduce dust mites.
  • Behind Stove and Refrigerator. Over time, crumbs, grease and other unwanted particles accumulate in these areas, providing a food source for insects and other pests. If possible, move the appliance out from the wall and unplug. Using a long-handled, slightly damp sponge, mop the back of the appliance to lift dust from the surface and then wipe the floor and walls with hot soapy water.

A Spooky Good Clean - October 7, 2016

We go throughout our lives knowing that we need to be regularly cleaning things such as our toilets and sinks, but what about all of the other things in our house that are regularly neglected? The following items need a spooky good cleaning in your home this Halloween season.
Your Mattress
After a long day at work, you can’t wait to crawl into bed and enjoy your favorite TV show. Then you remember what your local Chem-Dry told you about your mattress. Your mattress is filled with pounds of dead skin, gallons of sweat, and millions of dust mites. Sounds like a nightmare doesn’t it?
Your Carpet
If you aren’t getting your carpet regularly cleaned, you should. Your carpet is a magnet for hair, dust, pet fur, dead skin cells, allergens, and so much more. Not only that, if you aren’t getting your carpet professionally cleaned, you have the potential of mold collecting underneath that soft cushioning underneath your feet. Also, your carpet contains 4,000 times more bacteria than your toilet. Think about that disturbing fact next time you’re lying on your carpet.
Your Remote Control
We bet you didn’t know that the thing that you touch multiple times a day is one of the dirtiest items in your house. Your remote is sneezed on, spilled on, and covered with spills and messes daily. It give us the heebie-jeebies just thinking about all of the bacteria that accumulates on your TV remote daily.
Your Couches
We eat, we lounge, we watch TV, and so much more on our couches, but couches are known for their disgusting manner. There’s crumbs and change in the cracks, there’s bacteria on your couch (just as much as what is on your toilet seat), and disease causing bacteria survives on soft surfaces for 24 hours. Do yourself a favor, get your couches professionally cleaned before it’s too late!
Your Kitchen Sponge
Just like it was mentioned in some of our other items on this list, your kitchen sponge is 200,000 times dirtier than your toilet seat. We are washing our dishes with something that is dirtier than our toilet? Not to mention that some organisms from our food get lodged into the nooks and crannies of our, so called, cleaning device. Now that is eerie.
Don’t let the inside of your home be as spooky as the decorations outside it.

Happy Halloween from San Juan County Chem-Dry!

Keeping your abode at a lower temperature and humidity will cut down the chances of dust mites and mold spores making an appearance in your dwelling this Spring.

5. Wash or replace moldy shower curtains
Make it a point this season to exchange that old moldy shower curtain that's been hanging up for ages! Our shower curtains are a breeding ground for mold. Not to mention that the mold can journey to other parts of our home in the hotter months of the year!
